Well, Vancouver seems to have survived the great windstorm of 2006, and residents are busy preparing for the holidays. I’ve noticed a lot of amazing photos added to our Flickr pool, as well as from Vancouver photographers and bloggers across the lower mainland. One Flickr user has even created a pool called “The Vancouver Windstorm Pool” in which you can add your windstorm pictures into. Here’s a great one from SqueakyMarmot.
Wow…just wow!
Spotted this on the Vandigicam Flickr discussion board. Still looking for that gift for the photographer or budding hobbyist? Might be able to get a good deal here:

Vancouver and the entire lower mainland has been blanketed by the white stuff over the last 72 hours. While this often presents challenges for commuters, school children and anyone just trying to get around, it also presents some great shooting opportunities for photographers.
I even noticed that the official FlickrBlog mentioned that there was “Snow in Vancouver, Believe it or Not.”
We’ve received a handful of great snow-related shots submitted to our Vancouver Photobloggers Flickr group, but not many. Please add your great winter photos to our group, and we’ll feature some of them right here. For now, here’s a great one by Maziar.

I spotted this on Gizmodo this morning. So Flickr has been gathering camera data from its users and has created some graphs that show what cameras are being used most on the photo sharing service. For DSLRs it seems that the Canon EOS Rebel XT is the runaway favourite, followed by the Nikon D50. Click on the link below to check out all the information and to also see the most popular point-and-shoot and cell phone cameras.
It’s finally official. Nikon announced their new entry level consumer DSLR, the Nikon D40. DPR got their hands on a production unit and have put together a very detailed hands-on preview of the camera.
As we knew all along the leaks were fairly accurate, Nikon has today announced the six megapixel, compact, ‘entry level’ D40 digital SLR. This new digital SLR loses some of the D50’s features but gains some new ones from the D80. Headline details are a new Multi-CAM530 three area AF sensor, 3D Color Matrix Metering II, custom Auto ISO (same as D80), 2.5 fps continuous shooting, no status LCD and in-camera retouching. The D40 also has lots of nice user interface touches designed to make using the camera an easier experience for first time users. We have a production D40 and have produced a detailed hands-on preview in anticipation of a full review in the next few weeks.

This is actually a post to appeal to the philanthropist in you. Seen ‘Born into Brothels’? well this is kind of similar but for kids in Peru. Fellow photographer Mike Callaghan is working on a non-profit arts project, for youth in Peru. While in Peru a couple months ago Mike met Vanessa CĂșneo, a local photographer, who was born and raised in Lima. Currently she is an art teacher in Cusco, Peru and wants to start teaching her students the art of photography. The only problem is, she only has one enlarger to try and teach about 20 kids. While there Mike realized that he wanted to try and help her, by collecting some major supplies, once he returned home.He is looking for about 3 to 5 B&W (or colour) enlargers (or more, if he can) and any other darkroom supplies that would be helpful. Would you happen to have anything that you might be willing to give away or let go of for cheap or know of anyone else that has equipment they don’t use? Mike is doing this out the generosity of his heart and funding the whole production. Please ask anyone you think may be able to help. Thank you for your assistance. To contact Mike you an reach him via email: m.callaghanis@gmail.com
The Flickr vandigicam group is organizing a Vancouver Aquarium tour for later this month. They have yet to set the date/time yet, but are getting a final list of interested attendees.
Back in August I managed to spend some time with my son and some out-of-town friends at the aquarium, and I took a few photos. The rainforest section (not sure what it’s actually called) was one of the most enjoyable for me because there were no “cages” or glass to shoot through (that’s my pic of a butterfly from the Vancouver Aquarium on the right).
So if you are interested in participating, head over to the conversation going on in the vandigicam Flickr group.
The vandigicam Flickr group is having an impromptu meet-up at the Parade of the Lost Souls on Commercial drive:
Parade of the Lost Souls
When: October 28 - 6:00PM-10:00PM
Where: Commercial Drive-ish. Starts at William and Cotton (field) and ends at Grandview Park.
Costumes, lanterns, fire dancing.
Their website is here (Public Dreams Society).
So if you are interested in participating, drop by the vandigicam discussion board for more information. Feel free to post photos from your outing on our Vancouver Photo Bloggers Flickr group.
